The History of Cancer Foundation of the Florida Keys
In the summer of 1998 three woman who were attending a Wednesday night Woman’s
Breast Support Group decided it was time to create a foundation that would help local cancer patients who were undergoing cancer treatments. One of the women attending the support group who was a single parent with two children having to work, and take care of her two children while fighting her battle with cancer needed financial help and could not find a organization in Key West that would help her. The three woman one of which was Mercy Hiller the Chair of the Cancer Foundation each wrote a check and opened a bank account at First State Bank to begin assisting cancer patients. They soon began the paper work to receive their 501(3)(C).
The Cancer Foundation has helped hundreds of cancer patients throughout the Florida Keys for the past 10 years and has given hundreds of thousands of dollars a year in assistance each year to cancer patients. These patients have needed assistance with their mortgages, rent, groceries, utilities, car payments, health insurance premiums, etc.
The Cancer Foundation of the Florida Keys is an all-volunteer organization dedicated to assisting needy cancer patients while they are in treatment for their disease. They provide financial assistance, emotional support, educational materials, educational seminars, cancer screenings, information, and referral services to cancer patients. To support these patients the Cancer Foundation solely relies on the generosity of public and fundraising events to raise money.
The Foundation has no salaried personnel, and has no physical office. “What we raise stays in the Keys”, is the motto of the Foundation and is used to assist needy cancer patients to pay their daily living expenses.
Please help them spread the news about the Foundation. When more people know about their services more people can be helped.
